What is Reiki?
Reiki is a spiritual practice developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist, Mikao Usui. This technique is commonly called palm healing or hands-on-healing as a form of alternative medicine and is sometimes classified as oriental medicine. Some English-language authors translate reiki as "universal life energy". Chinese qi or ch'i in reiki is understood as meaning "spiritual energy; vital energy; life force; energy of life". Practitioners believe that they are transferring universal energy (i.e., reiki) in the form of qi (Japanese: ki) through the palms, which they believe allows for self-healing and a state of equilibrium. The Westernized forms of reiki use systematized hand-placements rather than relying on an intuitive sense of hand-positions. Training in both branches has a three-tiered hierarchy of degrees, all of which are associated with different skills and techniques.
In 1938, a woman named Hawayo Takata established several Reiki clinics throughout Hawaii, and then went on to travel throughout the United States, practicing Reiki and teaching. In 1970, Takata began initiating Reiki Masters. Almost all Reiki taught outside Japan can be attributed to her work.
Usui summarized some of the emperor's works into a set of ethical principles, which later became known as the Five Reiki Precepts (meaning "The Five Commandments"). Some teachings stress the importance of the practitioner's intention or presence in this process. Further, there is the belief that the energy is "intelligent", meaning that the Reiki knows where to heal, even if a practitioner's hands are not present in the specific area.
In Western Reiki, it is taught that Reiki works in conjunction with the body’s meridian energy lines, and chakras (nerve centers), through the use of the hand-positions, which normally correspond to the seven major chakras on the body. Practitioners may also use a non-touching technique, where the hands are held a few centimeters away from the recipient's body. The hands are usually kept in a position for three to five minutes before moving to the next position. Between 12 and 20 positions are used, with the whole treatment lasting anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes. The intuitive approach might also lead to individual positions being treated for much shorter or longer periods.
It is reported that the recipient often feels warmth or tingling in the area being treated, even when a non-touching approach is being used. A state of deep relaxation, combined with a general feeling of well-being, is usually the most noticeable, immediate effect of the treatment, although emotional releases can also occur. A series of three or more regular treatments is recommended with the aim of maintaining well-being in the range of one to four weeks. One approach is to give a whole body treatment first, followed by a localized treatment for any specific ailments or injury. I recommend periodic treatments as a “tune-up” to help maintain a healthy life.
Reiki reportedly treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit, thus creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported "miraculous" results. It is a natural and safe method of healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It is used in treating illnesses and maladies and creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side-effects and promote recovery.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not, because it impacts the human energy field. It is “experiential” in nature, which means it must be felt to be believed and enjoyed. Reiki makes you feel wonderful! I got my first degree Reiki training in 1990 in Maui, Hawaii, my 2nd degree in 2010 and my advanced Reiki in 2011 in Palo Alto, California.
